In today's world, makeup isn't just a luxury—it's a daily staple for many. While makeup can enhance our features and boost our confidence, it’s essential to be aware of what we’re applying to our skin. What goes on our skin goes straight into our blood stream. Our skin is our largest organ so it’s critical to know exactly what you’re putting on it. One concern that has been gaining attention is the presence of hormone disrupting chemicals in makeup products.

What Are Hormone Disrupting Chemicals?
Hormone disrupting chemicals, also known as endocrine disruptors, are substances that can interfere with the endocrine system, which regulates the body's hormones. These disruptions can cause various health issues, including reproductive problems, developmental disorders, and even cancer. Endocrine disruptors like parabens, phthalates, and triclosan are often hidden in many cosmetic products. Don't be swayed by flashy marketing, vibrant colours, influencer endorsements, or enticing scents. Always check the ingredients list to know exactly what you're putting on your skin.
Common Endocrine Disruptors in Makeup
Parabens: Used as preservatives to extend the shelf life of products, parabens can mimic estrogen in the body, potentially leading to hormone imbalances.
They are commonly found in foundations, mascaras, lipsticks, perfumes, deodorants, body care products and many other products.
Some examples include Methyl paraben (MP), butyl paraben (BP), ethyl paraben (EP), and propyl paraben (PP).
Phthalates: These chemicals help to increase the flexibility and longevity of products. However, they have been linked to several reproductive and developmental effects, such as early onset puberty for girls, reduced sperm count, harm to the developing brain, and reduced fatal growth.
Other studies show a link between phthalates and endometriosis and premature delivery in women.
Phthalates are often hidden under the term "fragrance" in ingredient lists.
FACT: “Fragrance” can include up to 300 different chemicals. It's known as a ‘trade secret’ which means companies don’t need to disclose the ingredients.
Some examples of phthalates include butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), di-isononyl phthalate (DiNP), and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP).
Triclosan: Triclosan can interfere with thyroid hormones and contribute to antibiotic resistance.
An antimicrobial agent found in cleansers, soaps, toothpaste, shaving cream, and some cosmetics.
The Impact on Health
Exposure to these chemicals can have significant health implications, especially with prolonged use.
Hormone disruptors can:
Affect Reproductive Health: Chemicals like parabens and phthalates can lead to reproductive issues such as infertility and developmental problems in offspring.
Increase Cancer Risk: Certain endocrine disruptors are linked to an increased risk of hormone related cancers, such as breast cancer.
Cause Hormonal Imbalances: Disrupting the endocrine system can lead to issues like thyroid disorders, weight gain, and mood swings.
How You Can Choose Safer Makeup Products
Read Labels Carefully: Be vigilant about reading ingredient lists. Look for products labeled as "paraben-free," "phthalate-free," and "fragrance-free."
Opt for Natural and Organic Products: These products often use fewer synthetic chemicals and more natural preservatives. However, still read labels as natural doesn’t always mean safe.
Research Brands: Some brands are committed to producing safer, non-toxic makeup. Research and choose brands that prioritise clean ingredients.
